Board Appointment

The SWRB is pleased to announce that the Minister for Social Development has appointed Toni Hocquard as Chairperson of the Board from 1 February 2010 through to 31 July 2011.

Toni has been a Board member since August 2008. Toni is a Registered Social Worker, full member of ANZASW and holds a Bachelor of Social Work and MA (Hons) (rehabilitation) from Massey University.

Toni worked for a time at Palmerston North Hospital, before spending 5 years in Papua New Guinea.  On returning to New Zealand she secured a position at QE Health (formerly Queen Elizabeth Hospital), Rotorua, working in the field of rehabilitation.  Patient education was a particular focus and Toni was instrumental in establishing the Fibromalgia Programme. Toni is a recognised speaker and trainer nationally and has presented many seminars and workshops to health professionals in the field of rehabilitation.  An opportunity to move into education has seen Toni return to her roots, and she is now the Stream Co-ordinator for the Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Social Work) at Waiariki Institute of Technology.

Deputy Chair Stuart Macdonald will remain as Acting Chair until Toni’s appointment begins on 1 February 2010.

UPDATE:

Discussion Paper

The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) / Social Workers Registration Board Consultation Paper due in September has been postponed as further options to reduce the cost and complexity of becoming a registered social worker are developed. The Board has already reduced the cost of applying for registration and implemented a less complex and costly competence assessment process. The Board is now looking to develop further proposals to reduce cost and complexity. The purpose of this work is to encourage more social workers to become registered. The consultation document will likely be incorporated into a full review of the Social Workers Registration Act 2003 as per Section 104 of the Act. We will keep you posted on progress.

Statement of Intent 2009-2010

Enhancing the professionalism of social workers and increasing registrations are the SWRB’s focus areas for the coming year, as outlined in the Statement of Intent for 2009–2010.
